Spider Control in Westchester: Which Species to Watch For

Most Westchester spiders are harmless, but a few require attention. BluesWay Pest Control identifies the species homeowners encounter and explains when and how to address indoor spider populations.

Spider Control in Westchester: Which Species to Watch For

Spiders in Westchester County: Context and Perspective

Westchester County's wooded neighborhoods, older housing stock, and seasonal insect populations support a wide variety of spider species. Most are entirely harmless — and ecologically beneficial, controlling populations of flies, mosquitoes, and other insects.

That said, some spider species warrant attention, and indoor populations that have grown to the point of regular sightings indicate an underlying condition that a pest professional should assess.

Common Westchester Spider Species

Common House Spider (*Parasteatoda tepidariorum*): The most frequently encountered indoor spider in Westchester homes. Small, brownish, with a rounded abdomen. Creates irregular cobwebs in corners, basements, and garages. Completely harmless to humans. Their presence in large numbers typically indicates abundant prey (small insects) in the home.

Cellar Spider (*Pholcus phalangioides*): Long, thin legs and small body — often called "daddy long-legs." Found in damp basements and crawl spaces. Harmless. Effective predators of other spiders.

American House Spider: Related to the common house spider, slightly larger. Builds messy, funnel-like webs in corners and along structural joints.

Wolf Spiders (*Lycosidae*): Large, fast-moving, ground-hunting spiders with distinctive eye patterns. Found at floor level, especially in basements and garages. They don't build webs and actively hunt prey. Startling but harmless.

Jumping Spiders (*Salticidae*): Small, compact, with distinctive large forward-facing eyes. Active hunters during daylight. Completely harmless and often curious about humans.

Yellow Sac Spider (*Cheiracanthium* spp.): Pale yellow, found in upper wall/ceiling corners, especially in late summer when seeking indoor harborage. The species most likely to bite defensively in our region, though bites cause mild localized irritation similar to a bee sting rather than serious tissue damage.

Species That Require Caution

Black Widow (*Latrodectus mactans*): Identifiable by the red hourglass marking on the underside of the glossy black abdomen. Found in undisturbed areas — wood piles, outbuildings, rarely indoors. Bites are medically significant and require physician evaluation. Less common in Westchester but present in our region.

Brown Recluse: Despite common reports, confirmed brown recluse populations are not established in New York State. Most suspected brown recluse sightings in Westchester are yellow sac spiders or similar species. If you have genuine concerns about a bite, contact a medical professional.

Why Spiders Are Inside Your Home

Indoor spider populations reflect the presence of their prey. Abundant spiders = abundant small insects = a condition worth addressing. Common reasons for indoor spider populations:

- Flying insects attracted to interior lights through gaps around windows and doors

- Moisture issues in basement or crawl space supporting fungus gnats, springtails, and other small insects

- Structural gaps that allow exterior insects (and the spiders that follow them) to enter freely

Effective Spider Management

Sealing entry points, reducing exterior lighting, and addressing moisture conditions in basements are the most effective long-term approaches. Perimeter insecticide treatment in fall — before spiders seek indoor overwintering sites — significantly reduces interior populations.
